Experience
Christopher Tan is an experienced litigator with an emphasis on intellectual property law, including patent infringement and proceedings under the Patented Medicines (Notice of Compliance) Regulations. Christopher’s litigation experience also extends to commercial and construction disputes, as well as the enforcement of foreign judgements and court orders. He has represented clients before the Federal Court of Appeal, Federal Court, Ontario Court of Appeal, Ontario Superior Court (including the Commercial List), and the Trademarks Opposition Board.
His intellectual property work covers patent, trademark, and copyright litigation across sectors such as pharmaceuticals, automotive, and hardware products. Christopher has acted as foreign counsel in review proceedings before the United States Patent Trial and Appeal Board and advised clients on trademark protection and prosecution. Beyond litigation, he regularly provides strategic advice on intellectual property matters, assisting clients with product development and negotiating commercial agreements including licensing and supply contracts.
Christopher’s clients include innovator and generic pharmaceutical companies as well as manufacturers of consumer goods, particularly in the tool and hardware industries. He is fluent in English and has working proficiency in Mandarin and Cantonese Chinese.
He contributes to the community as Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors of the Chinese and Southeast Asian Legal Clinic, a community-based legal clinic funded by Legal Aid Ontario, where he also serves on the Executive and Policy & Governance Committees. Christopher is a member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada.
Christopher holds a Juris Doctor from the University of Western Ontario and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Ottawa. In addition to being a lawyer in Ontario, he is a registered Canadian trademark agent and is qualified as a lawyer in New York State.
