Experience
Belle Van is an accomplished intellectual property lawyer and registered Canadian patent agent, with a practice concentrated on patent litigation, intellectual property disputes, and strategic IP counseling. Belle routinely represents clients before the Federal Court, Federal Court of Appeal, and has experience with matters before the Supreme Court of Canada. Her practice encompasses all aspects of IP litigation
Belle’s expertise extends to advising clients on commercial contracts, licensing, and transactional matters involving intellectual property, as well as regulatory compliance in highly regulated sectors such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and consumer goods. She is adept at guiding clients through the nuances of IP portfolio management, patent prosecution, and the development of strategies tailored to both established and emerging technologies.
Belle holds a Juris Doctor from the University of Detroit Mercy and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Windsor, graduating cum laude from the joint Canadian and American law program. She was a recipient of numerous awards, including an Award of Excellence, a CALI Award in the Law of NAFTA, and awards for highest grades in employment law, commercial sales and comparative civil procedure and professional responsibility. She also earned a Bachelor of Radiation Sciences from the University of Toronto, providing her with a strong technical foundation that informs her legal practice.
In addition to her legal work, Belle is an active member of the intellectual property community. She serves as Co-Chair of the IPIC Patent Administrator Committee, is a member-at-large of the CBA IP and Women’s Sections and is a member of the Advocates’ Society. Belle has contributed to leading publications in the field, including as a co-author of a chapter in the Canadian Patent Law Benchbook, a resource relied upon by judges across Canada.
